By Denis — first-hand family trip notes. Updated: Jan 2026.
Korçë (also written Korce) was the perfect “slow reset” trip for our family. The vibe is calm, the city is easy to explore on foot, and you can get your nature fix without doing anything extreme. We went for the simple stuff: good breakfasts, long walks, a viewpoint hike, a quiet mountain village, and a lakeside stop on the way back.
This guide is personal (what we did + what we’d do differently) and practical (so you can copy our plan for your own trip).
Our family trip to Korçë (what it actually felt like)
We went to Korçë as a family and it felt like the perfect “slow reset” trip. The drive from Tirana was chill, and even though there’s a newer road being built that makes the route smoother, we’d still choose the Pogradec way if you want a seriously pretty view.
This guide mixes our real itinerary (the wins + the small annoyances) with practical planning tips you can copy for your own 2026 trip.

Route note (from our trip): If you want the most scenic drive, consider going via Pogradec. The views are worth the extra “wow factor,” especially on the way back when you’re not rushing.

Our Itinerary (at a glance)
Day Plan Why it works Day 1 Korçë city day: church + streets + Old Bazaar Easy pacing, no pressure Day 2 Morava Cross hike (choose-your-effort) Big views, adjustable effort Day 3 Voskopojë day trip Quiet reset, historic atmosphere Return Pogradec lakeside stop + optional Lin Perfect “last day” energy
Where we stayed (honest review)
We stayed at Life Gallery Hotel. It had great wellness vibes: sauna + pool and a solid breakfast. The only downside was noise at night.
Our take: I’d go there again for the facilities but if you’re sensitive to sound, I’d sleep somewhere quieter and use this hotel mainly for the sauna/pool time.
Quick hotel checklist (for a quieter night):
Ask for a room away from the street
Check recent reviews for “noise / music”

Day 1: City wandering + “slow culture” day
We explored the city on foot—church stops, the street with the beautiful buildings, and long breaks in between. It was the kind of day where you walk, sit, talk, and repeat.
Tip: Keep Day 1 light. Korçë rewards slow pacing more than rushing between spots.
Morava hike (choose your own effort)
We hiked Morava and loved that it works for different energy levels. You can drive up as far as you want almost to the top then decide where to park and how much to hike.
- Easy version: drive higher, short walk for views
- Moderate version: park earlier and hike longer
- Family-friendly approach: do the hike in “chunks” and stop often
National Museum of Education (the First Albanian School)
This is one of the most interesting quick stops in Korçë. It’s in the building of the first Albanian school (Mësonjëtorja).
We only stayed about 7 minutes, but the photos of the students stuck with meso many of the kids look unusually mature in the portraits.
Verify: The museum is in Korçë (not Shkodër).

Voskopojë day trip (magical, quiet, cinematic)
Voskopojë felt like walking into a movie quiet streets and old churches that make you slow down naturally. Some of the Churches are 300 years old and you can enter for free.
Watch out: the road there is very curvy. The return drive has beautiful views, so we treated it like part of the experience.
On the way back: Pogradec (lake view) + optional Lin
On the return, we recommend stopping in Pogradec at a bar with a view of the lake.
If you’re feeling adventurous, add a quick stop in Lin as well.
Bonus: Devoll hike (off-the-beaten-path)
We also hiked in the Devoll area—very unique and not widely known. It felt like a “locals-only” kind of route.
Responsible tip: ask locally about trail conditions and avoid going alone if weather changes quickly.

The “real Korçë” stop: Markata e Shijes (local market)
If you want to see a totally different side of Korçë, make time for Markata e Shijes. It feels less like the postcard version of town and more like real daily life — locals shopping, chatting, and stocking up on food.
It’s a straight walk from the Old Bazaar, so you can easily pair it with your city day. We loved it because it’s the kind of place where you slow down without trying: you look around, taste things, and you end up leaving with snacks you didn’t plan to buy.
What you’ll find:
- Seasonal fruits and vegetables
- Local cheeses and dairy
- Honey, jams, and preserves
- Nuts, dried goods, and spices
- Homemade-style products (depends on the day and vendors)
Our tip: go earlier in the day if you want the best selection, then come back toward the Bazaar for a café break.

Practical Tips (the stuff I wish someone told me)
If you’re traveling with family
- Build in long breaks (Korçë cafés are perfect for this)
- Keep the hike day flexible (Morava is ideal for mixed energy levels)
- Don’t stack too many “must-sees” in one day
What to pack (quick list)
- Comfortable shoes (cobblestones + walking)
- Layer for evenings
- Water bottle
- Snacks (you’ll end up buying more at Markata e Shijes anyway)
Quick “what we’d do differently next time”
- Choose a quieter place to sleep (or request a quiet room)
- Spend more time browsing local products (Markata e Shijes)
- Add a little more buffer time for the Voskopojë road
1) Is Korçë a good “wellness” destination if you don’t want intense hiking?
Yes. Korçë works well for slow wellness travel because you can build your days around easy walks (like Parku Rinia), café breaks, and culture—then add a hike only if you feel like it.
2) What’s the nicest way to drive from Tirana to Korçë?
From our trip, the drive felt chill. If you want the best views, we recommend going via Pogradec (and enjoying the lake scenery). If you’re optimizing for speed, check the newest road options closer to your travel dates.
3) What should I do on Day 1 in Korçë?
Keep it simple: explore the city center, visit a church, walk the street with the classic buildings, and spend time in the Old Bazaar area. Korçë is best when you don’t rush.
4) How hard is the Morava Cross hike?
It’s flexible. You can drive up as far as you want (even close to the top) and then choose where to park and hike. That makes it great for families and mixed fitness levels.
5) Is Parku Rinia worth it?
Yes—especially for wellness pacing. We like using it as a daily “anchor” for an easy walk and a quick stretch, then letting the rest of the day unfold.
6) What’s special about Voskopojë?
Voskopojë felt magical—quiet, cinematic, and full of old churches that make you slow down. The road there is very curvy, so take it easy; the return drive has beautiful views.
7) Any tips for hotels in Korçë (based on your experience)?
Our hotel had great vibes and facilities (sauna/pool/breakfast), but it was loud at night. Our take: use a hotel like that for facilities, but consider sleeping somewhere quieter if you’re sensitive to noise.
8) Is the “First Albanian School” museum worth visiting?
Yes as a quick stop. The National Museum of Education (Mësonjëtorja) is meaningful and easy to visit. We spent only a few minutes, but the historic student photos were surprisingly memorable.
9) Should I stop in Pogradec or Lin on the way back?
We recommend it. Pogradec is perfect for a lakeside drink with a view. If you feel adventurous, add Lin as a short extra stop.
10) What about the Devoll hike you mentioned?
It’s a unique, low-crowd hike that felt more “local knowledge” than mainstream trail. If you go, ask locally about conditions and avoid pushing it in bad weather especially if you don’t know the route.
Wellness note: This trip is about relaxation, movement, and culture—not medical treatment. If you have a health condition, check with a professional before hikes, sauna use, or long drives.
